picnics in June and October 2004

Two very successful, very enjoyable picnics were held in June and in October. In June a number of the Afghan men working in the Kilcoy meatworks were able to join us for one of the biggest picnics we have yet had.
The following is the report on the picnic in the ‘Buddies’ Bulletin’ of the following week:
WOW !!!!! WHAT A FABULOUS “BIG DAY OUT” !!
Did you see the full page in today’s “Sunshine Coast Daily” about the BDO, with photos? We reckon there were about 100 refugees, about 100 Buddies and friends, - and then 3 buses, lots and lots of cars, 85 halal steaks, lots of sausages, 3 trestle tables loaded with a truly magnificent feast, perfect weather - and a great feeling of relaxation among friends.
Once again the children seemed to have a wonderful time, the women formed groups and talked and laughed, and the men ditto. The face painting of the children, and the impromptu dancing added greatly to the day. Congratulations all round, especially to our co-ordinator and the bus drivers, and many others who organised the Day.
Thanks to all Buddies and friends who brought delicious food - who spent time getting to know our refugee friends from Brisbane and Kilcoy, and each other within Buddies. Sr de Lourdes and Sr Janine, both from the Romero Centre came in one of the buses. The Manager of the Kilcoy Pastoral Company (who donated the steaks) came too, and has offered to do it all over again in 6 months’ time! Several people from RAG at Caboolture (refugee support group there) came, bearing food.
The Maroochydore Lions Club allowed us to use their fantastic BBQ trailer, even bringing it down and setting it up for us, all for $20 for the day. That actually made all the difference to our ability to cope with the cooking. The Caloundra Chorale and Theatre Co lent us some trestle tables, which also made a huge difference. And wasn’t it just great to see so many of our newer Buddies there, - excellent!
October picnic
The picnic in October was ideal in all ways. The weather and venue were perfect. Our guests from Brisbane were ready for a wonderful time. A good number of ‘Buddies’ came along. The food was great. In all ways, a wonderful day! The photos below give some idea of the day. On this picnic an angel and a pineapple came along to paint the faces of the children. Good fun!
The Whole Group
It is great fun to meet many people and to share stories.
