Buddies is a Queensland, Sunshine Coast based group that advocates for just and compassionate treatment of refugees consistent with the human rights standards which Australia has developed and endorsed.

The members orchestrate a number of exciting projects.

Buddies periodically hosts a “Big Day Out” for clients and staff of various Refugee Support organizations in Brisbane. It’s a chance for people who are living under constant worry and frustration to simply get away from it for a day, and to feel that someone cares. Picnics are held with clowns (sometimes), delicious food, music, art and get-acquainted games.

A roster of homes has been developed for hosting TPV and Bridging Visa holders so they can have a day or a weekend break from the Brisbane situation. Many Buddies’ homes are also open to staff of any refugee support organization. All of these people “in the trenches” are stretched to the limit, and a respite will help support them and their work.

Many Buddies members are writing letters to detainees in detention centres.

Sometimes members make and sell muffins and organize events to raise money. This helps fund fund many of the projects, including assisting with and housing locally-based asylum seekers.

All are welcome at Buddies’ meetings in Buderim. For details, or if you would like to explore ways that your friends and colleagues and Buddies might link up, please contact us .

Where to buy hallal meat

For those of you who host Middle Eastern people, I have found where to buy hallal meat. The butcher on the corner of Mill Rd & King St in Buderim in the ‘Town Spot Centre’ has organic meat free from hormones & pesticides etc which is certified & stamped hallal meat.
